Jan Flaska hat sich die Mühe gemacht, Hergest Ridge in neuem Glanz erscheinen zu lassen - und das gleich zweimal: Original und Boxed Mix.

I'm here again with more remasters that hardly anyone gives a fuck about
After half a year of work I finally finished my Hergest Ridge remaster. I must have heard the composition a hundred times, but it still gives me goosebumps at places, every single time.
Now - if you have my old attempt at remastering the HR Boxed remix, please
delete it. It's crap. I mean it.
This time, I remastered BOTH versions of the album and did it much better, using all the experience I gained while remastering the Boxed remix a year ago. I'm particularly proud of the fact that I managed to remove most of the horrible distortion from choirs at the end of Part One which bugged me ever since I first heard Hergest Ridge some thirty years ago...

Even if you don't want to get my remaster, you might find it interesting to listen to the original and Boxed mix side-by-side (they run at slightly different speeds, hence the differences in timing when you switch between them).
After so many repeated listenings, I'm absolutely convinced that Mike's decision to use the Boxed remix for all post-1976 releases was a right one. It's interesting to dwelve into all the extra instrument lines in the original mix, but many of them are sooo badly played and very often they just cover and bury the beautiful parts under them... The Boxed remix, even though inferior sound-wise, is much more balanced and cleaner than the original. But judge for yourself.
Last thing - I made a 20-page booklet for the album which you can both read on your computer or print it or have it printed. This time, much of the text is mine, based on research I did on the net and in books. There's - as I hope - some interesting information you might not know on both Hergest Ridge and the singles included. Plus, I used MO photos from 1974 which I found around the net and had never seen before. Hope you like these, too. - Apologies to those whose photos of Hergest Ridge countryside I stole from the net - sorry, but I didn't have the chance to go there and shoot some photos myself...

Ist ein bisschen wie Schönheitschirurgie oder Molekularküche?
Man kann überall noch etwas einem Optimum annähern, aber was dabei herauskommt, ist nicht unbedingt „schöner“ oder schmeckt besser.
Mir persönlich gefällt dieser gläserne, zerlegte, überdeutliche Klang gar nicht so. Gerade Hergest Ridge darf mir ruhig ein wenig wie von weit her klingen

Mein Fall ist es allerdings auch nicht. Die Unterschiede erinnern mich stark an meine Erfahrungen mit Arranger-Keyboards von Korg vs Yamaha.
Die Yamaha-Sounds klingen dort immer sehr "poliert" und wie von CD. Die von Korg sind roher und klingen, wie von echten Instrumenten.
So ähnlich empfinde ich das auch hier. Der neue Mix ist zu clean und dünn. Es fehlt das Gefühl, dass da wirklich jemand gerade spielt.
Aber das ist natürlich - wie man an Jan sieht bzw. hört - wie immer Geschmacksache.
